It’s one of Nepal’s great classic treks, though it reaches lower altitudes than the Annapurna Circuit and the Everest Base Camp trek.

From Pokhara, we gradually make our way into the valley through Chhomrong, climbing through villages, rhododendron forests and deep gorges to Machhapuchhre Base Camp. From here the landscape opens up completely, and the final stretch leads to Annapurna Base Camp, in the heart of the Sanctuary.

Our journey doesn’t end with a simple descent along the same route. After leaving the Sanctuary, we reach Ghandruk, one of the region’s most important Gurung villages, and continue through Pitam Deurali and Dhampus before returning to Pokhara. This way, the trek combines the high-mountain experience with some of the most beautiful rural landscapes and villages on the southern side of Annapurna.

You’ll be accompanied by certified local Nepali guides with extensive experience in the region, a strong command of English and, where available, Italian. Trek

Our guides have walked the trails of the Annapurna region countless times and know its Sanctuary trek inside out: a route with no mountaineering difficulties, but plenty of ups and downs, long stretches of steps, and a landscape that changes fast as you get closer to the mountains.

We’ve chosen a 13-day itinerary that lets you reach the Machhapuchhre Base Camp and the Annapurna Base Camp gradually, without turning the trip into a race. After a night in Dobhan, we climb to the Machhapuchhre Base Camp, then enter the Sanctuary the following day to reach the Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, before heading back down to sleep at the lower village of Deurali.

The way back is part of the journey too. Instead of heading straight down to Pokhara, we cross Chhomrong and reach Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung village looking out over Annapurna South and Machapuchare. From there we continue on to Pitam Deurali and Dhampus, rounding off the trek through scenery quite different from that of the upper valley.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a great fit for anyone who wants to experience a major Himalayan trek without going above 5,000 meters. It calls for no mountaineering skills, but it’s still a genuine mountain trek, with several hours of walking each day and the need to be ready for highly variable weather and temperatures.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Itinerary

Our trek to the Annapurna Sanctuary runs 13 days from arrival in Kathmandu. (Frequently Asked Questions)

Who is the Annapurna Base Camp trek suitable for?
It’s suitable for adult trekkers in good health who are used to walking in the mountains. No mountaineering skills or previous Himalayan experience are required.

With a maximum altitude of 4,130 meters, it’s less demanding in terms of elevation than the Annapurna Circuit, the Everest Base Camp trek, or the Manaslu circuit, but it’s still a genuine multi-day trek, with climbs, descents and many hours of walking.

How difficult is the Annapurna Base Camp trek?
We consider it a moderately difficult trek. The trails are generally well-marked and don’t involve any mountaineering sections, but the route is physically more demanding than the 4,130-meter maximum altitude might suggest.

One of the features of the southern side of the Annapurna range is the huge number of stone steps, with constant climbs and descents that can be tiring, especially for the legs and knees.

Are there really that many steps on the Annapurna Base Camp trek?
Yes. Especially around Chhomrong and along the valleys on the southern side of the Annapurna range, you’ll walk many sections built with stone steps.

They’re not technically difficult, but the long uphill and especially downhill sequences can be tiring. We recommend training on routes with plenty of elevation gain and using trekking poles.

How can I prepare physically?
We recommend arriving at the start of the trek used to 5–7 hour hikes, gradually increasing distance and elevation gain in the weeks beforehand.

Treks with 700–1,000 meters of elevation gain and routes with long ascents and descents are especially useful. For Annapurna Base Camp, it’s important to train not only cardiovascular endurance but also your legs and knees, since the trail includes many steps.

How much walking is there each day?
Most days involve about 5–6 hours of walking, with some shorter stages and others that can stretch to 6–7 hours.
On this trek, elevation gain often matters more than distance covered: the southern slopes of Annapurna are marked by deep valleys and frequent ascents and descents.

Are Annapurna Base Camp and the Annapurna Sanctuary the same thing?
Not exactly. Annapurna Base Camp is the base camp itself, located at 4,130 meters, while the Annapurna Sanctuary is the vast natural amphitheater of mountains and glaciers that surrounds it.

To reach it, you gradually make your way into the narrow Modi Khola valley up to Machhapuchhre Base Camp; from there, the landscape suddenly opens up and you find yourself surrounded by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machapuchare. It’s this dramatic entrance into the Sanctuary that makes the trek so special.

Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit: which is better?
It depends on the kind of trip you’re looking for. Annapurna Base Camp is shorter, reaches a maximum altitude of 4,130 meters and leads into the great natural amphitheater of the Annapurna Sanctuary.

The Annapurna Circuit is longer and more varied: it crosses Manang, reaches Tilicho Lake, crosses the Thorong La at 5,416 meters and enters Mustang. If you have three weeks and aren’t worried about high altitude, we prefer the Circuit; if you want a great Himalayan trek in about two weeks without going above 5,000 meters, Annapurna Base Camp is the better choice.

Is the Annapurna Base Camp trek safer because it reaches a lower altitude?
The maximum altitude of 4,130 meters reduces the risk of altitude sickness compared to treks that go above 5,000 meters, but that doesn’t mean Annapurna Base Camp is without risks.

The stretch between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp crosses a narrow valley below slopes exposed to avalanches, especially after heavy snowfall. Our departures are scheduled during the most favorable seasons, and guides always assess actual trail conditions before crossing these sections.

In the mountains, no itinerary is ever completely risk-free: what makes the difference is the time of year chosen, the conditions on the day, and the guide’s decisions.

Is there a risk of altitude sickness at Annapurna Base Camp too?
Yes. Altitude sickness can appear as low as 2,500 meters, so a maximum altitude of 4,130 meters doesn’t completely rule out the risk.

Our itinerary climbs gradually up to Machhapuchhre Base Camp, where we spend the night at about 3,700 meters. The following day we reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters and return to sleep lower down at Deurali.

Guides monitor participants’ condition, and if significant symptoms appear, the priority is always to stop or descend to a lower altitude.

Do you sleep at Annapurna Base Camp?
No. Our itinerary includes an overnight stay at Machhapuchhre Base Camp, at about 3,700 meters. The next morning we enter the Sanctuary, reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, and then descend to Deurali for the night.

This way we can fully experience entering the Sanctuary and reaching the Base Camp without adding an extra overnight stay above 4,000 meters.

What’s the best time to go to Annapurna Base Camp?
We recommend spring, between April and May, and autumn, from late October to November.
In spring, the rhododendron forests are especially beautiful, while autumn generally offers excellent mountain visibility. After heavy snowfall, especially on the upper part of the route, conditions on the stretch between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp need to be assessed with particular care.

We don’t recommend this trek during the monsoon: the southern side of Annapurna receives very heavy rainfall, with wet trails, low visibility and a higher risk of landslides.

Do I need a guide, and what permits are required?
To enter the Annapurna region, you need the TIMS Card and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Current Nepalese regulations also require the use of licensed guides for treks in areas covered by the TIMS system.

Himalaya Exped arranges the guide and permits directly before the trip begins.

What language does the guide speak?
English is always guaranteed: all our Nepali guides who accompany international clients speak English.

When available, we can also assign guides with a good knowledge of Italian or German. However, these languages aren’t guaranteed on every departure: if they matter to you, let us know before booking and we’ll check the availability of the most suitable guide.

Do I need specific insurance?
Yes. We ask participants to have travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, medical expenses, and emergency helicopter evacuation if needed.

Annapurna Base Camp reaches 4,130 meters, so it’s important to check that your policy doesn’t exclude trekking activities at this altitude. Many insurance plans include specific altitude limits that must be verified before departure.

How is luggage transported during the trek?
In Kathmandu, we’ll give you a duffel bag to hand over to the porters. We normally provide one porter for every two participants, with a maximum of 13 kg of personal luggage per person.
The duffel bag is carried to the next stage and will be available again once you arrive at the lodge.

I don’t want to use a porter because I’m afraid of exploiting them. Is it really necessary?
It’s a concern we understand, but the issue isn’t using porters — it’s how they’re treated. Working as a porter or guide is one of the main tourism-related income opportunities for many families in the mountain regions, and refusing their work on principle doesn’t necessarily help them.

At Himalaya Exped, porters are part of the team. We work with local people and guarantee fair working conditions, insurance coverage during the trek, and strict weight limits on the loads they carry. We typically allow one porter for every two participants, with a maximum of 13 kg of personal luggage per traveler.

For us, responsible tourism doesn’t mean taking work away from local communities — it means making sure that work is done with dignity, safely, and with fair pay.

What backpack should I carry during the day?
During the trek, you’ll carry only a light backpack, roughly 20–25 liters, with what you need during the day: water, a waterproof jacket, a warm layer, sunscreen, sunglasses, documents, camera and small personal items.
The rest of your gear travels in the duffel bag carried by the porters.

Where can I leave the suitcase I use for the flight?
Anything you don’t need during the trek can be safely left at the hotel in Kathmandu and picked up on your return.
Along the route, you’ll only need the duffel bag entrusted to the porters and a small daypack.

Where do we sleep? Are there private bathrooms?
During the trek, we stay in tea houses and village lodges, generally in simple double rooms.

In the lower, busier villages such as Chhomrong and Ghandruk, it’s easier to find accommodations with a private bathroom. Heading up toward Dobhan, Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp, the lodges become more basic and shared bathrooms are more common.

Our guides always look for the best accommodation available, but an en-suite bathroom can’t be guaranteed at every stage. Rooms are usually unheated; lodges often heat the common dining room instead.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, on the other hand, we stay in 3-star hotels in double rooms with private bathroom and breakfast included.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
Yes. Even though the altitude is lower than on other Himalayan treks, nighttime temperatures at Machhapuchhre Base Camp can drop below zero, and the lodge rooms are not heated.

We recommend a sleeping bag suited to low temperatures, with a comfort rating of around -20 °C. If you don’t have one suited to Himalayan conditions, you can rent one in Kathmandu.

Where do we get drinking water during the trek?
Himalaya Exped provides 2 liters of drinking water per participant every morning, to be carried in your own water bottle or thermos. In lodges, it’s usually possible to buy extra boiled or bottled water.

Water straight from taps, fountains or streams should not be drunk without first being boiled, filtered or treated with a water purification product.

What do we eat during the trek?
Lodges serve simple but fairly varied food. Nepal’s signature dish is Dal Bhat: rice, lentil soup, vegetables and curry — nourishing and especially suited to trekking days.

Noodles, soups, fried rice, potatoes, pasta, eggs, momos and various vegetarian dishes are also common. As you climb toward the Sanctuary, the choice becomes progressively more limited.

Our guides tend to recommend simple, often vegetarian dishes at the more remote lodges, especially when there’s no guarantee that meat has been stored properly.

Should I bring energy bars or supplements?
They’re not essential, but it can be handy to bring a few bars, nuts, or supplements you’re already used to taking during hikes.
We especially recommend bringing products you know you tolerate well, and avoiding trying new foods or supplements during the trek.

What temperatures will I encounter during the trek?
The trek crosses very different altitudes and environments. In the first few days and around Pokhara, Chhomrong, and Ghandruk, daytime temperatures can be mild or even warm, while temperatures drop quickly once you enter the Sanctuary.

At Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp, temperatures can drop below zero at night and in the early morning. In sunshine, though, even at high altitude the temperature can feel pleasant during the day.

It’s therefore important to dress in layers and always carry a warm layer, wind protection, and waterproof clothing.

Can I charge my phone, camera, etc. during the trek?
Yes. Most lodges let you charge phones, cameras and other electronic devices.

Power is usually easier to find at the lower villages; as you climb toward Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp, there may be an extra charge and availability can be more limited.

Either way, we recommend bringing a high-capacity power bank. At altitude, the cold also drains batteries faster.

Is there phone signal and Wi-Fi during the trek?
In the lower part of the route and in the main villages, mobile coverage is generally quite good and many lodges have Wi-Fi, often for a fee.

As you climb toward Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and Annapurna Base Camp, the signal becomes less reliable, so you shouldn’t expect a constant connection.

We recommend buying a Nepal Telecom (NTC) SIM card at the airport or near your hotel, since it offers coverage along the Annapurna Base Camp route. Even on this trek, it’s a good idea to download maps, documents and anything else you might need offline before you set off.

Do I need any special vaccinations to go to Nepal?
For travelers coming from Europe, no mandatory vaccinations are normally required to enter Nepal, except in specific cases related to travel from or transit through countries at risk of yellow fever.

It’s still advisable to be up to date with routine vaccinations and to check with your doctor or a travel medicine center which vaccines are recommended for Nepal, such as hepatitis A and typhoid, depending on your health and the type of trip.

<div class="wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-07430a17 alignfull
